so i’ve been thinking about racial representation lately, and one thing that’s increasingly bugging me is how like… racial representation is always being discussed in the context of black and latin@ people, and sometimes asian and middle eastern people. and that’s cool, there needs to be more representation of all kinds of people, and it’s great to have a really diverse range of character interpretations and renditions.
but like, with steven universe—rebecca sugar is jewish. she’s ashkenazi like me. and i don’t… i don’t see jewish characters very much. i don’t see jewish headcanons very much. alex hisrch is also ashkenazi and the pines family aren’t canonically jewish— he’s said it’s left up to interpretation.
whether or not greg and steven universe are jewish is also i guess left up to interpretation and generally it seems like no one interprets it. i see rebecca sugar criticized as a clueless white bitch who’s talking down to black people, way more than i see anyone talking about how her race might influence perspective on violent versus nonviolent resistance to oppression, exploitation, and genocide.
i guess i’ve just been thinking about how tumblr draws and interprets characters, and how often diversity headcanons are black or latin@ or asian extraction but jewish representation kind of seems to begin and end at stuffing a character in a hannukah sweater. like that’s the only way anyone knows how to draw a jewish character.
like, i’m used to studying the hell out of how to draw different races in good ways, but the ways people draw jews fall into like three categories: ugly antisemetic charicature of the big nose and brown eyes and curly hair, or acceptably blond and pretty guy who happens to be jewish, or double-dipping for tumblr points black/asian guy who happens to be jewish. and there’s black and asian guys who are jewish. but you know, there’s a lot of people who look like me who are jewish, and i feel like i never see them except on the gross caricatures, and that kind of sucks.
i don’t really have a big shame-everyone point here to make, i was just thinking about drawing characters from the adventure zone, and i’ve seen them as like all different kinds of races, and i thought, ‘what i drew one of them as my race?’ and i… couldn’t think of how to do that. i don’t know. i don’t think i’ve ever done that. i don’t think i’ve ever dawn anyone as ashkenazi. and i guess i’m kind of sad about that. i don’t know how to draw characters of my own race because i’ve never done it before.
anyway going forward, antisemitism is gonna be more of a thing than ever, so, to keep it positive, maybe drawing jewish characters, especially characters that are specifically racially ashkenazi instead of the usual ‘literally anything else but in a hannukah sweater’, would be a good way to push back against that.
Campaigning is not allowed inside polling places, or a certain distance from them. Once you are inside your polling place, no one is allowed to try to influence your vote — and you’re not allowed to try to influence anyone else’s vote inside the polling place either. This is a really strict rule, and it probably means that you won’t be allowed to wear a shirt or button with your candidate’s name/logo on it inside the polls.
The rules against campaigning inside a polling place are really strict in order to protect voters from intimidation. Voting is private, polls are private places, and there are a lot of rules and laws in place to protect them. You also can’t do things like pass out flyers, hold up signs, or answer questions about candidates inside the polls. Election judges err on the side of caution when deciding what counts as campaigning. Generally speaking, anything with a candidate or party’s name visible is likely to be seen as campaigning — including a button or t-shirt that you are wearing. (The same may go for logos)
Since people wear election shirts/buttons as a way to campaign for their candidates, they’re generally not allowed inside the polls. So, if you wear a candidate shirt/button to the polls on election day, you will most likely be asked to take it off or cover it up. If you’re planning to wear a pin, you can put it in your pocket or pin it to the inside of your shirt while you’re inside the polls. If you’re planning to wear a campaign t-shirt, bring something with you to cover it up with.
tl;dr Campaigning is not allowed inside polling places. Wearing a t-shirt with a candidate’s name or party’s name visible is likely to be considered campaigning, just like if you were holding up a sign for your candidate. If you’re planning to wear a campaign t-shirt or button on election day, be prepared to take it off or cover it up while you are actually voting.
IMPORTANT
Do not go to vote wearing a T shirt like this and if you are wearing any badges or stickers like this take them off before going into the polling place
Here in Texas I’ve already seen polling places with Republican candidates yard signs and people in line wearing shirts supporting Republican candidates (or bashing non-republicans) weren’t turned away. Conservatives aren’t playing by the rules in many states, but they’ll still do everything they can to prevent you from casting your ballot.
Election Protection (nonpartisan voting rights organization led by lawyers) and the Department of Justice both want to hear about law violations like this.
The Election Protection Hotline can be reached at 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683), (Spanish/English: 888-Ve-Y-Vota 888-839-8682), (Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Bengali, Urdu, Hindi Tagalog, or English: 888-API-VOTE), (Arabic/English: 844-418-1682)
You can report possible violations of voting rights laws to the Department of Justice in various ways:
When y’all vote. Don’t just vote for president and leave the rest blank. Vote democrat down the entire ballot. If Hillary wins with a republican congress it’s gonna be 4 years of no movement they’re gonna block everything
Hhhhh fuck my life, millenials are turning out in low numbers for early votes. I’ve seen several of you that have already voted but please, if you haven’t then go *before* the rush next Tuesday. You will lose less sanity and be less overwhelmed, if people try to bullshit you on ID shit you have more time to get what you need, the lines aren’t so long you can’t get your vote in, it’s all-around a much better experience.
If you don’t like Hillary, hold your nose and pretend it’s Bernie. We need Bernie-level turnout here and even Bernie has said it. Vote Hillary so Bernie has a shot at enacting some serious reform in the Senate. He can do amazing things in the Senate if he’s backed by other Senators and a President that leans liberal.
*gets down on my knees and prays to any gods that can hear me*
IF YOU ARE IN LINE BEFORE THE POLLS CLOSE, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO VOTE
If anyone tells you the line is full, or that the time is up and everyone in line needs to go home, DO NOT LEAVE. Call the Election Protection Coalition at 1-866-OUR-VOTE.
IF YOU LIVE IN COLORADO, CONNECTICUT, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, IOWA, MAINE, MINNESOTA, MONTANA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NORTH CAROLINA, WISCONSIN, WYOMING OR THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, YOU HAVE SAME-DAY REGISTRATION.
This means that even if you are not currently registered to vote in that state or you need to update your registration with a new name or address, you can register there at the polls. You will need a photo ID and proof of residence to register.
In Montana you will register at your election official’s office and be given a provisional ballot that won’t be counted until you return with proof of identity.
But if you live in one of those places and someone tells you you missed a deadline to register, they are wrong and you should call the hotline above.
Han is all “there’s to much Vader in him,” without mentioning that there is too much Vader in Leia too.
Like, Bail Organa, bless his poor poor soul, tried to politician the Vader out of her. He tried SO FUCKING HARD.
But the fact that she abandoned politics to be a General in the Resistance says a lot about her similarities to Anakin Skywalker.
See, people get it wrong. They assume because Luke got the blond hair and the lightsaber that he is Anakin’s child. He’s not. He’s Padme’s.
Leia, though. Leia is very much Anakin’s child. She is the one with the deep anger in her. She is the one who will bring peace to her new empire freedom and justice back to the galaxy whether the galaxy wants it or not. She is the one who commands armies and amasses followers as easy as breathing. She joined the Rebellion while she was in her teens. She is the one with the spirit of a warrior.
Don’t get me wrong; Bail Organa did his damnedest to raise her in the mold of her mother, fighting her battles in the halls of power with words as her weapons. And she was very good at it. But unlike Padme, Leia’s words always had an edge to them, her tone and meaning always a little too sharp, a little too angry.
Peace and mercy are the trademarks of Luke and Padme. Justice and order, obtained by whatever means necessary, are the marks of Leia and Anakin.
How the throne room scene actually should’ve gone:
“If you will not turn to the Dark Side, perhaps she will.”
“Pffffthahahahaha yeah, okay Dad, let me know how that turns out. Look, the reason I’m here instead of her is because I want you alive and not a cloud of vaporized plastic. You know she strangled Jabba the Hutt with the chain he put around her neck, right? That’s what she does to people who try to control her. Better tell your Emperor you’re not allowed to have any more ideas.”
