It’s like the whole Jonestown thing (those people who drank the poisoned kool aid; if you don’t already know about it, don’t look it up if you’re triggered by seeing dead bodies and stuff) 

He found all the rejected, miserable, vulnerable people he could 

and started telling them they were worth something.

If you are told all your life that you’re useless, 

when someone finally tells you that you are worth something, 

you develop a strong attachment to them

and would go to great lengths for them. 

Even die for them.
